The City
of Hull is proud to boast many famous and distinguished personalities,
both past and present. There are also one or two infamous characters
we'd probably much sooner hide away! There are a great many more
we've forgotten, so please add
a personality to our lists. |

Andrew
Marvell |
Poet, politician and satirist, born in
Winestead, Hull. He travelled widely in Europe and became Milton's
assistant. He is remembered for his pastoral and love poems, notably
‘To His Coy Mistress’ and ‘Upon Appleton House’.
His works were largely ignored until they were revived in the 20th-c,
by T S Eliot, who recognized in them an integration of thought and
feeling. After becoming an MP (1659), his writing was devoted to pamphlets
and satires attacking intolerance and arbitrary government. Bookshelf |
