Alan Plater

Alan Plater was brought up in Hull and educated at King's College, Newcastle. He trained and worked as an architect before becoming a freelance writer in 1960. He has written extensively for radio, television, the theatre, films and the press. He has over 200 credits in radio, television, theatre and films. His awards include several BAFTAs, an International Emmy, a Golden Globe and is an FRSL and FRSA.

Z Cars crew.His stage works include Close the Coalhouse Door and Sweet Sorrow, a play about Philip Larkin, his film scripts The Virgin and the Gypsy and his television scripts, individual plays, situation comedies, documentaries, series such as Z Cars, A Very British Coup and The Beiderbecke Affair and dramatisations such as The Barchester Chronicles and the award winning The Fortunes of War, based on the novels by Olivia Manning. His publications include books based on the Beiderbecke series and a number of plays.
